What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold the teeth in place and is most often the result of poor oral hygiene. This is because the infection is caused by the build-up of plaque and bacteria around the tooth, which results in inflammation. Risk of getting periodontitis can be increased by a number of factors, such as smoking, hormone changes in women, diabetes, cancer and saliva-reducing medications.
Mild or early gum disease is very common but, if left untreated, it can cause severe tissue damage and destroy the bone that is supporting the teeth. Eventually teeth can become loose and may fall out or need extracting. Periodontitis can also lead to a number of serious health problems, such as heart disease, respiratory issues and strokes, so acting to prevent it is important in maintaining long-term health.
Common symptoms include:
- Tender gums
- Swollen or puffy gums
- Bleeding gums
- Bad breath
- Pus between the teeth and gums
- Pain when chewing
How Can I Help to Prevent Gum Disease at Home?
To prevent a visit to the periodontist, you can ensure you are maintaining good oral hygiene by following these steps:
- Using floss every day to clean gaps between the teeth.
- Brush teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time, using fluoride toothpaste
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash to prevent growth of bacteria
- Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months
- Avoid smoking
- Limit sugar intake & follow a healthy diet
